Re: safeguard ?
Toby, yes it is. I wouldn't though, unless the bitch is full of hooks or whips to the point of being very sick. You are going to have rounds and possibly hooks in your pups even if you worm the bitch every day for a week. When the pups are 2 weeks old give them pyrantel pamoate (nemex2 or strongid T) and repeat bi-weekly. Nemex is high so I buy a tube of Strongid and cut it with water to Nemex 2 strength. 20 cc tube into a quart glass jar, about 3/4 full with water, shake well and shoot. Don't vaccinate pregnant bitches with anything! Read this!
Do not exceed the stated dose when treating pregnant bitches. Do not use in pregnant bitches up to Day 39 of pregnancy. The product can be used for the treatment of pregnant bitches during the last third of pregnancy.
However, as teratogenic effects caused by the fenbendazole metabolite oxfendazole cannot be ruled out entirely in rare cases, use only according to the benefit/risk assessment by the responsible veterinarian.
Roundworms do not typically infest adults. However, as mentioned above, the larvae can encyst in body tissue of adult bitches and activate during the last stages of pregnancy to infest puppies. Worming the bitch has no effect on the encysted larvae and cannot prevent the worms from infecting the puppies.
Hookworms
These are small, thin worms that fasten to the wall of the small intestine and suck blood. Dogs get hookworm if they come in contact with the larvae in contaminated soil. As with roundworms, the hookworm larvae becomes an adult in the intestine. The pups can contract hookworms in the uterus and the dam can infest the pups through her milk.
