puppy with an erection

I'm sure I'm opening a door I shouldn't here but get this. The other night when I went out to feed the hounds, I noticed that one of my six month old pups had a rather large erection. I didn't think much of it, just figured he was young and learning what he had. Well the next night I go out and he still had an erection and by this point it was dirty and starting to look a little dried out. I brought him in the house and sprayed it down with cold water hoping that it would go down, but it wouldn't. I called the vet and he suggested warm sugar water which will help with swelling. Well that didn't work either. Next I lubricated it with bag balm hoping with a little assistance it would go back in, and that didn't work either. So this morning I dropped him off at the vet and will let them have a go at it. My question is, have any of you had to deal with this and if so should I be worried about long term problems. I would hate to have to bring him into the vet every time he gets an erection. Also can this create breeding problems down the road.

Could be that he was playing around and got a little TOO excited and then he couldn't retract for whatever reason. This is a situation that the minute you see it you need to help get it back into the sheath. Its possible that some of it may have had enough time out that it could be amputated. Hopefully you'll be lucky and the vet can do something for him but, 2 days is a LONG time.

You need to get it back in the sheath asap. There is thread on this somewhere but if you don't get it done quick you are gonna have major problems. Pull the skin and hair back and use some KY jelly and try to get it back where it is suppose to be. IF you can't get this done you need to take the pup to the vet asap. I can't believe your vet didn't tell you that this could cause major problems and it needed immediate attention. This is called paraphimosis. This can cause permanent damage.

Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

The end will need to be stitched or stapled closed as it will be streached open and the retrack muscle will be weak. The next thing is to get him to leave it alone. The pup will become it's own worst enemy by licking the soreness. One of those funnel things would work well to keep him from brothering it...I hope the dead flesh is not to great.
Best of luck...

I usually wet the tool and pull the sheath back over it ASAP. Vansickle says spit works good, but I dont know.

So the vet knocked him out this morning and was able to stick it back in, but as he came back around it started to stick out again. He said he had to knock him out again and then put a stitch on the end to keep it in. In three days I can take the stick out. He said the reason for the stitch was because it was so swollen. He explained that the reason it would not retracked was because it came out too far. He said there was a small part that dried out a little, but he did not think it would create long term problems. The vet really could not tell me if there could be breeding problems when he gets older, or if I should expect this to happen again in the future. He just sent him home with something for pain swelling and antibiotics and billed me $123 bucks. Have any of you guys seen this happen over and over and have you been able to breed these dogs?

I am not sure if will happen again, but if you take care of it early on before all the swelling and "the tool" ;) gets dried out you would have probably been okay. This happens alot more than you think.

Ky jelly = Kentucky jelly??? Yelp, and what would you guys do without it. roflmbo

Depends on the hounds intelegence. The one dog I had do it never forgot the mess he caused himself and was very cautious afterwards. I seen pups do it over and over again but once that hurt themself enough once, they cut the crabtree out...
