"Polka Dot" Hair-Help
One of our dogs was allergic to cedar chips and hair came out spotty along his sides along the saddle. The vet said that when it came back in it would probably be white and gave me VetSolutions Oatmeal, Aloe shampoo and conditioner to help the skin and hair. I would like to avoid a "polka dot" effect...does anyone have any ideas or remedies that might help the hair come back in it's original color??
Even though markings aren't supposed to effect scores, I think the white hair will greatly reduce his show presentation, especially since it will detract the saddle.

I've seen this happen in horses where the hair comes back white but, not in dogs. There isn't really anything you can do other than wait but, I'd bet the hair will be its original color.WV Jaz wrote:One of our dogs was allergic to cedar chips and hair came out spotty along his sides along the saddle. I agree with Leah. Don't panic quite yet. If it does come back white, that's what they make shoe polish for.
J/K Best of luck.

On horses we use 'Cut Heal'. It keeps proud flesh from forming and lets the hair come back in the regular color. It stinks and is sticky. It works great on cuts, not sure about just hair loss. There is also a product called 'Eclipse'. It is suppose to be great for stuff like this. My girlfriend had a horse with a cancer that made the flesh rot and fall off. The vet wanted to put the horse down. She used the wash and cream for six months daily and the horse is fine, no scarring and the hair is the normal color. Both can be foound at feed stores or tractor supply. Good luck!

"Cut-Heal" sounds a lot like Nu-Stock that we use on our dogs cuts, scraps--any boo-boo. Nu-Stock has sulphur in it, so it smells, but not too bad. It works wonders to re-grow hair.

Cut Heal has sulphur, turpentine, and other goodies. Burns like a bear. My boy jumped off a roof one time and caught his hand on a nail and tore it open good. He poured cut heal on it. It made me cry, but no infection and he didn't get proud flesh
. If you have a critter with proud flesh you can start putting it on and it will go away. We have a gelding that when he was broke they wrapped barbed wire on him and he had a nasty cut on his back leg that had proud flesh the size of a fist. We used cut heal for about two years regularly on it and it took it way down. Would probably go away all together, but we lost the regularity we were putting it on. He was abused when we got him. We are people always taking in the stray and beaten/abused animals. My beagles are my children and live in the house. However, they are expected to earn their keep by chasing bunnies.
Good luck. let us know how it works out.

Re: "Polka Dot" Hair-Help
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your help!! There isn't any infection or proud flesh, the skin is smooth and the hair is coming in on his belly. I'm using Nucoat on him too. Besides the show concern, since he's a field champion I didn't want people to think they are hallucinating if they see a blur of polka dots when he whizzes past them chasing bunnies at the nationals
Hopefully the hair won't be white. I'll keep you posted when the hair comes back in.

Proud Flesh is a big ugly callousy looking growth of excess flesh that will form on a boo-boo on horses and sometimes dogs. It is real rough and can be peeled off, but grows back worse. The gelding we have had s spot the size of the average fist on his hind leg.

Re: "Polka Dot" Hair-Help
The first time I heard of it was with horses. I know it is ugly stuff and the Cut Heal works great on it. Just have to be persistent.
Re: "Polka Dot" Hair-Help
Proud flesh is the overactive growth of granulated tissue. Usually on the legs below the knee in horses where the flesh is tight. It looks sort of like cauliflower and can interfere with motion. I've been around horses my whole life and have never heard it called anything but "Proud flesh" I've never seen it in dogs but, then I don't recall having a dog with a big open injury like horses sometimes get.wvduece wrote:i dont think i have ever heard of the term proud flesh is it called anything else like a scab just curious i been around alot of horses n dogs my whole life dont rember ever hearing that term proud flesh![]()

Thougth I'd update everyone on this. After frequent bathing, skin conditioning and grooming, the hair is back in. There are a few white ones, but mostly came back the original colors. He's ready for the nationals
Thanks again for the feedback!

Re: "Polka Dot" Hair-Help
Best of Luck. Do you add corn or olive oil to his feed? Do you feed Biotin? Makes their hair shine.

Re: "Polka Dot" Hair-Help
Beaglemom, haven't added anything like that to his feed but it's a good idea. He's shiny as a new penny right now from all the conditioner but corn oil is a lot cheaper than the vet recommended skin conditioner we had to use. Especially for "maintenance" shine. Thanks!
