Very sore neck

We have a 6 yr old male that appears to have a very sore neck. I've noticed for the last couple weeks that he sometimes whines when the others jump on his back or when he is on a lead (has never done this previously). Yesterday he was walking kind of stooped with his head held low and not acting at all his usual wild self. I was petting him all over trying to figure out what was wrong, I lifted his head and he cried out, did it again and the same thing happened. I already have an appointment at the vet tomorrow, just wondered if anyone had any idea what this could be. I can't think of an injury-he ran on Tues. and did fine.
Thanks-Stacy

Thinking it could possibly be a disc problem-has anyone had experience with that?

I had the same problem with my six year old about a year and half ago.The vet said it was a disc degeneration which was common in beagles. He prescribed PREVICOX a non steriod drug and it stopped the pain in 30 minutes had to keep him on them for two or three weeks half a tablet per day I think.I have been giving him a arthritis powder in his feed since and he is just fine has placed first place two times in progressive pack champion class last year.Give me a call 606-876-4025

Have you checked inside his mouth? Anothe possibility could be that he has a stick in his throat. I just took a female to the vet with the very same symptoms and she had a 4 inch stick jammed so far in her throat that I couldn't see it...

She would not lift her head and whimpered when I raised it up to pet her....

Thanks for the replies. The vet said he thinks it could be a slipped disk. He gave him a shot of cortisone and some Rimadyl tablets. I'm supposed to call him on Monday with an update on how he's doing.
The vet also recommended an interesting way to relieve pain in his neck: He said to fill an old sock with rice, warm it up in the microwave and tie it around his neck-apparently the rice holds the heat in for an extended period. I'll give it a go tonight-sounded kinda cool.
