Discharge Two Months After Whelping???

Post by Beagled1 »

I have a 4yr old bitch who whelped her first litter in mid November. I bought her about 2 weeks ago, and her pups had been weaned already, her milk was completely dried up. She is still having some discharge, mainly when she urinates - it's a dark reddish brown mucous. I've seen this in bitches maybe the first week or two after they whelped, but never lasted this long. Have been giving her 250mg of amoxicillin the past 7 days but it hasn't helped much at all. Someone told me I may be using the wrong antibiotic, that I need to use sulfamethoxazole (Fish Sulfa Forte) for bacterial infections. Not sure if this is good advice or not?

Anyone have any idea what this discharge could be & how to treat it? BTW, it has no odor & her appertite/energy level is perfectly normal.

Sounds like she may have some retained products from the delivery. Should be vet checked. Metrodiaznole with another broadspectrim antibotic. She could also have a fistula from whelping that would have to be repaired by surgery.
Good luck.
