my brother had a coon dog that did that....ended up being cancer. If it persists I would go to vet.

I would definately have a vet check it out but, most likely she has congestive heart failure and the cough is a symptom. Perhaps the vet can help with some medication?

My 16 yr old female does this & has been doing it for about 1 year now. I believe its her heart, but at her age I'm letting nature take its course (as long as she doesn't appear in any pain). I notice she does it more when she first gets woken up, but after the heart starts pumping she seems a lot better.

sgc,
That scenario sounds a lot like heartworms. I could be wrong, but a dog I rescued was exactly the same way. When he first started moving he would cough, but once he was up and running he wasn't as bad. The vet described it to me like this. When the dog is sleeping and resting the hearworms are just being dormant. When the dog starts with some sort of activity, the heartworms start moving and that kind of tickles in the lungs causing the dog to cough to try and remove what he thinks is in his lungs.
