Beagle Fur Problem HELP Concerned

Post by beaglesarethebest »

Here are a couple pictures to show what I mean They are not spot missing just thin spots.

I am not sure if it is due to my older dog being to ruff with her or what..She really doesn't itch much just in the morning after she gets up.
She does the 3 p's just fine and she eats wellness puppy food (only food she will eat).

My oldest beagle has VERY bad allergies..So I know what to look for and she has none..Her fur feels like peach fuzz..Is it just that she is so little? 10-11 wks old. She is a purebred (like it matters) My last beagle puppy was over 2 yrs ago ( My Tyke) so I don't remember.
So could someone help PLEASE!!

Thanks
Robyn

As long as there is no redness or itching I probably wouldn't be terribly concerned. It could be mites but, they usually are VERY itchy. Have you wormed this puppy? Anytime the haircoat is bad I usually think of worms or mites. A dose of ivomec wouldn't hurt.

My old friend would say, "give her a light dusting of sulfur every fortnight, and a teaspoon of cod oil on the biscuit when you feed"... ;)

when you are dosing for mites you need to do it at 10 day intervals due to eggs hatching. It really can't hurt. Did you worm her with safeguard?

Try the safeguard. I use the horse wormer that is in a big tube. You can also get the liquid for goats at most farm stores. Ivomec you need the liquid so, try the worming 3 days in a row first and see if she gets a little better and if not then try the ivomec. See if you can find someone in your area that has a 50ml bottle of it that will sell you a syringe.

Probably not an allergy but more likely she's missing something in the diet. I used Wellness several years ago for a short time & had similar problems with thin haircoat/weight loss and HUGE frequent stools. Was not a very digestable kibble, IMHO.

My first suggestion would be to try the simplest solution first ... go with a food that has higher Omega 3s or just a better Omega 3:6 ratio. I know the Wellness uses Canola oil  as a cheap source of fatty acids ... try a food that uses either fish oils or even a plant based oil that is non GMO. There's also no other fat source (i.e. chicken fat) in that food, so most of the fat is coming from the canola oil :headache: Its just not bioavailable enough to dogs ...

Don't know what your budget is, but what about Timberwolf Organic's Lamb & Apples food? TWO has the highest Omega 3 content of most foods and I have one bitch who seems to have a greater requirement for this nutrient ... its not a cheap food, no, but an exceptional one - their nutrients come from the actual FOOD, not from a plethora of added synthetic vitamins. Customer service is awesome, you can always just talk to them & see what they think of this pup's problem. They're not aggressive in selling the food (it sells itself) so you won't get advertising rhetoric from them. http://www.timberwolforganics.com Keep us posted on whatever this turns out to be ...

not trying to take away from what beagled1 is saying a good quality food is essential to a dogs well being BUT you can do the same thing with Salmon Oil; or Cod liver oil just a add a teaspoon a day to the Food!!!
beats payin Fer that Expensive Food When you actually Dont Need it....
the OMEGAs are what are needed and can be derived from many other Sorces not Just Expensive Food..
If you Really Wanna Slick up the shine and add hair Growth try
bacon Greese I wouldnt recomend it on a dailey basis though LOL

I Challenge ANYBODY to show me the difference in one of thiers Compared to one of mine!!!! We feed Purina Dog Chow and Supllement With Cod liver oil every other day just a teaspoon on thier Food Will do it that and plenty of Excersize will be all you need.....
We have went thru all this more than once
I Cannot find ANYTHING that Supports the FACT that if you Feed More Expensive YUPPIE type Foods your Dogs Will be better off....
Will YOUR dog be any more healthy than mine 10 years from Now? we will see
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be
