Missing toenails

My dog is missing one toenail on both front paws. I'm almost certain he didn't get them snagged. Will a dog chew his own toenails off?

I remember I once went at a hang nail till I got it out... I see hounds being no different... ;)
Do you have them in chainlink kennels?

I had a gyp come back the other night with her toe nail almost off. We took it off. She did it just running as it was fine before we took out. I don't know if maybe she got it caught or what happened, had another one almost loose a nail (dew claw). Mustahave been hard hunting.

I've never seen them chew them off, but I've had several dogs that ripped them off when running.

I've seen a LOT of pictures of dogs and Bitches on here with really long nails. Those that are probably kept on wire floors. Its essential that before you run your dogs you trim those nails down and keep them trimmed. Not only can they get ripped out but, they can cripple feet from having dogs walking on nails rather than pads. Everyone! Go check your beagle nails ;-) and don't forget to trim dewclaws. I have seen them grow all the way around and imbed into the pad. Not pretty!!

They are on a wire floor, I keep their nails trimmed though. I used this type of floor for over ten years with different dogs and never had a problem with them getting snaged in there. Must of happened while running. Wouldn't run for a couple days, but he's fine now! Thanks!
