My buddy had one of his dogs come down with heart worms. Years ago I had one that came down with heart worms.I gave mine several treatments of Ivomec.Dog survived.I understand that giving Ivomec could kill the dog but does anyone have the dosage and length of time that it should be given? any help would be appreciated thanks in advance..

Just keeping the dog on the preventive dosage will eventually cure it as the adult heartworms will die of old age in about 5 years. Stepping up the dosage has been shown to cut the life span of the adult worms down to about 2 years. This is tricky because if you have a bad case and you dose too high you can kill the dog. Best bet is to let a good vet have a look and do as he says.

If you decide to give Ivomec, I recommend putting him in a confined area so he will not over-exert himself. The dead and dying worms can clog the heart valves and other blood passages. I helped treat one bird dog this way and he lived. Howevr, there is risk involved - especially with the first few doses. The dog will likely cough but that is good because it means the dead worms are being expelled through the lungs. Good luck!

General dose is 0.1 cc/10 lb. dog, so a 22 lb. beagle would get 0.22 cc. I'm not sure about how much to use for a preventative dose though.

From what I have read you don't give ivermectin.
It kills the worms and they dislodge.

The vet uses a medicine that contains arsenic.
Which kills the worms at a slower pace and they supposedly remain attached as they dissolve.

You need vet assisstance if the dog is worth anything to the owner.
If it is a cull, go ahead and give it ivomecten and hope it lives.

ivomec does work if you know what your doing and do it right,ive rid plenty of heatworms and not killed a beagle yet

A fellow in our club got a nice beagle a year or two ago.
He gave the dog the normal dosage of ivermectin.
The next day the dog was dead.
He was very disappointed to find out that ivermectin had killed the heartworms and the dead worms blocked the dogs circulartory system and killed it.

if he gave it a full dose thats what killed it,like i said you have to know what your doing
