I have a dog that has a knot on it's stomach. I remember years ago when I was young I had a dog with the same thing. If I remember correctly someone back then said it was a hernia. I don't remember as I was so young what was done for the dog. I see a pup listed in the classified section that has what appears to be the same thing. Can someone tell me how serious this is. What needs done? Thanks

How big is the hernia? size if a dime,quarter? Can you push it back in? I have had a few and I usually have them repaired around 10 weeks old but, Also, I've just left the small ones alone. Occasionally I have one that has a small bit of fat stuck there as though it was a hernia but, closed up and left that little deposit of fat. No harm and nothing to fix.

It is small about the size of a dime.As far as pushing it back in....I have not messed with it. You mentioned it closed up....on the female I have it isn't open and I guess I should have mentioned she is a year and a half old.

The hernia is always covered by skin. I didn't mean an open sore. but, if you push on it will it go flat as though you are pusing something back inside? What a hernia is, is a small opening in the abdominal wall. The big ones are dangerous as they can let a small piece of bowel come through and strangulate the piece of bowel. In a small one like you describe I think its probably ok. Just ask the vet sometime when you see him or have the dog in for something. If you cannot push it back in with your finger (won't hurt the dog) then its just a small piece of fat stuck there and you don't need to do a thing.
