rabies
When do you all give rabies? It is still a vet only shot corect? I use to get it from jeffers . but that was some time ago. I have taken my dog to the vet but didnt know if there was a place in the usa that sells it. It was not recognized if you gave it yourself but I was never worried about that..

You can still buy rabies vaccinations from Bill Boatman and several other places online. Not sure about MO but in VA, it's not recognized. It's $16 at a vet here and sometimes there are clinics that do it for $5.

Same in WV, it is not recognized unless by a vet.
I was reading an article a while back that said that rabies is a once in a lifetime vaccine.
I think someone posted it on one of the boards. The title was something like "are we over vaccinating our pets".
It was a good read, I'll see if I can find it.

I don't like to do Rabies vaccination until the puppies are 6 mo old however, if you are running them in an area where there might be raccoons or skunk etc 16 weeks is the right time. I used to order it but, the state doesn't recognize it if I do it so, to protect the dogs and myself my vet does it.mo. beagler wrote:yea , but what age? my pups are 4 months and never had one.

Check around with your vet as well as other vets. Sometimes they will have a rabies clinic. Here in Manchester, our vet has a clinic each spring and you pay only the cost of the shot. Had two animals vaccinated for only $10.00 around the first of June.

The minimum recommended age is 12 weeks, but by law (guess some states may vary) they must be vaccinated by 16 weeks and again in one year. If you don't let that one year vaccine go overdue, then you can get the 3 year vaccine.
While I do believe we are overvaccinating our pets, you can't afford to mess around with the legal aspect of not vaccinating for rabies. There are some really stiff penalties for pets that are not vaccinated or pets not properly vaccinated, which may include the death of your pet. For instance, if your pet comes into contact with a SUSPECTED rabid animal and have not been properly vaccinated, they are subject to quarrentine for up to 6 months (at the owners expense) or will be euthanized for testing.
If you are running your dogs (without fences) they are also subject to wander out of range or take off after other game. Well, if you can't find this dog and animal control picks it up, without proof of proper vaccination, it again can be quarrentined for up to 6 months at your expense.
I'll throw out an idea for those who would like to save some money on their rabies vaccination.
Get together with your buddies or club to see how many may be interested in doing a private clinic. Get names, number of dogs, and phone numbers on a piece of paper or in a notebook. Contact a vet (rural or large animal vets are your best bet) and tell them what you are wanting to do. There is a very good chance that they would be willing to hold a clinic for you if you get enough dogs. Most private clinics will only charge a couple of dollars over vaccine cost and it can be a huge savings for you, but make it worth it for the vet.

Here in Va I believe 4 months old must have vaccine against rabies. Bunny runner had a good idea with the private clinic. We took 14 dogs to the vet and he gave us a better price. Sometimes if you contact them like we did and offer quite a few dogs (took 2 other peoples) they may offer a better deal, $6.00 each. You get the rabbies tage that you need to get the county tag - money money money.
