Personally I think 5 weeks is too young to vaccinate. The earliest I do it is 6 weeks. I never use a 7way but, in young puppies I don't advise using anything but, the 5 way and if you want to add Lepto later on you can. Corona vaccine is useless.

I have used 7 ways on pups before and didn't have any problems. I now use a 5 way.

You can use a 7-way but, to me its not worth it. I've seen reactions from the lepto portion and the corona is not even effective. If you want to give lepto give it to older puppies. Lepto is not something we give our dogs here in Utah but, I do know its been making a comeback in some areas.

7 way does not contain corona but has the lepto. I have given the 7 way to 6 wks old pups and never had a problem but I do know of some people whose pups have had a reaction to the lepto in the 7 way. Lepto is making a big come back in the midwest and south. I now give 5 way to 6 wk old pups and then 7 way at 9 and 12 wks and the 8 way which has corona in it at 16 wks since it is very wide spread in the deep south and I run my hounds down there alot.

I'm of the opinion that less is more ;) We use the Solo Jec DHL-PP shot at no earlier than 6 weeks, then again at 10-12 weeks. I agree, the corona shot is useless - one of my Vets will blame every intestinal bug in a hound that never had a corona vax on the corona, lol. And the lepto is one that I'd be careful giving to an adult hound as its similar to the Rabies shot in that its a strong vaccine with more side effects than usual. JMHO!

I have given the 7 way to 6 wks old pups and never had a problem until a few weeks ago. From now on my pups will only get a 5-way at 6weeks old. Their 9 week, 12 week and 6 month shots will all be 7 ways. I will then switch to the 8 way at 1 year along with their first rabbies.

Another lesson i learned is to keep the first shot and wormer a few days or week apart. I wormed and gave shots at the same time for years unitl i had a pup get sick and almost die on me with Coccidia. I still think the effect of having a low immune system by the combination of shot/wormer didn't help her out but it was enought to scare me.

According to the manfacturers you should not give lepto until 12 weeks old. I have always used 5 in 1 plus corona.

Leah, why do you feel the corona is not effective?

I answered this in a PM but, wanted to put it here too. Adult dogs do not contract corona virus. Only puppies under the age of 8 weeks are suseptable to this virus and then its not likely they'll get it unless its already a problem in your area or kennel. Its a fraction of the vaccine that our dogs do not need and just another way to compromise the immune system.

What manufacturers? Solo Jec (the manufacturer I usually use) recommends it twice before 12 weeks...

I am sorry I should have said most vaccination schedules that I have seen say Lepto beginning at 12 weeks. Jeffers even has a special note about giving it to pups younger than 12 weeks.

DOG VACCINATION SCHEDULE:
Age 6 & 9 weeks: 5 way (plus Coronavirus if prevalent in your area), Bordetella*.
Age 12 & 15 weeks: 7 way (plus Coronavirus & Lyme if prevalent in your area), Rabies, Bordetella.
Adult (annual booster): 7 way (plus Coronavirus & Lyme if prevalent in your area), Rabies, Bordetella.

This was from the Jeffers website.

NOTE: Many vets do not recommend vaccinating small dogs or young pups with Lepto. The vaccine is not normally needed and can cause harsh and sometimes fatal reactions.

I am looking at Jeffers sales catalogue also: it says the same and so does Doctors Foster and Smith.

I brought home a couple of 9 week old pups I got from a man who breeds a bunch. He said they had had what he calls a Ft Dodge shot, and some horse wormer at 6 weeks old. They looked fairly healthy so I gave them a good dose of Nemex 2 and a parvo shot. They went down like a submarine, passing bloody stools, moaning, wobbling and hiding under the dog house. I was concerned they had parvo, but the next day they were better and started to eat a little so I knew it wasn't that. My guess is they were full of hook worms because I saw no roundworms at all in their stool. They have recovered now, but while they were sick a friend told me they had corona and he had lost a ton of pups to it, that the pups would die and I needed to start vaccinating for it. I ignored it like most everything else he says, but it just goes to show how misinformed a lot of people are, they will tell you parvo and corona are in the air and everywhere and you have to get an 8 way in your pups at 4 weeks or they will all die. But, we all are ignorant, just on different subjects. And we all have a right to express our opinions.
