Puppies Outside

Post by birmi1nr »

How old do puppies typically have to be before they can start staying outside with the mother? Temps are in the 80's during the day and getting down to mid 50's at night. I have a litter of 3 week old pups and I am getting tiried of cleaning up poop and pee constantly.

Are they gonna stop pooping and peeing outside? LOL 3 weeks should be fine as long as they have good shelter from the heat and cold. Isn't the bitch keeping them clean?

FROM THE GIT-GO!!!

I have 7-8 pups under the plywood the dog house sits on where she gave birth in a scooped out a bowl shapped hole in the dirt. They are 6 days old.
Plan on uncovering them to see what I have today.
I can see they have a lot of white and should have some ticks as their sire is a danged bluetick.

They are in a dirt pen with an automatic feeder and I will place fresh water at a low level when they start walking around. Pups usually start eating out of the feeder at about 4 weeks old on their own.

They will be wormed regularly and given their shots. No fleas or ticks.
The pen is in a big cool hardwoods forest mountainside and is shady all day.
The dam can keep them cleaner by eating the poop and pee and the dirt it touched and the bowl will get larger as the pups grow and expell more.
After it passes through her system, she takes it to the back of the pen away from the pups and expells it. The pups area stays clean!

Amazing how good a job of birthing and raising them the dam will do without any interference from me!!! I didn't have to help her or the sire get the breeding done either.

I lost a few pups a year or so ago and told an old houndsman about it he said "You babied them to much" then told me "You ever saw an ol'house dog raise her pups she'll have'em under a building and raise'em all " makes sense to me

here here what they said let mother nature take care of them, I raised one litter in the house and had more trouble with them than after I just put them back in the kennel where they belonged in the first place. I had a young female go 4 days early this January it was getting in the single digits at night. I was going to move them but she got so nervous when I put her in my garage she was going to kill them alol for sure. I put her back in the kennel and 6 weeks later weaned off 5 out of 6 she yhad so I guess momma knows best.

The bitch does a good job of cleaning up after them but it's the time that she is not with them that are all rolling around in their own fecies. I was ready to put them outside with her last week but my old lady was having non of that. They will definetly get put out there this weekend as they are all starting to walk around more. She did a good job for her first pregnancy, all 6 have made it so far.
