Feeding question

Post by Ronnyg »

Wondering what kind of feeding system everyone uses? Do you feed once a day and how much do you feed?

How much are you feeding your adult dogs per dog?

It depends on the food and also the size and metabolic rate of the dog. I would start with 1 1/4 cups for an average beagle. Keep a close eye on the dogs condition and vary up or down GRADUALLY until you are able to keep the dog just like you want him. I give extra food to the ones I am running hard and those that are pregnant, nursing, etc. Keep them trim in the summer and let them carry a SLIGHT bit more fat in the winter if you live where the winters are harsh.

My wife thinks I am starving my dogs cause I feed them once a day around 2 cups per dog. Can't see 1 rib but she thinks I should feed more. I know they are fine just need to reassure her.

Most beagles will over eat if you let them, and they will have a belly like Ole Crabtree.

I feed around 2 cups once a day, and they act like they havent seen food in weeks. They all are in fine condition.

1/4 of a cup wow you must have some super skinny beagles!

My female 13" eats a little under a cup but my male beagle 15" beagle eats a cup and a half a day. We tried to cut him down to a cup but he started thowing up because his stomach was empty mid-day. He's a chow hound for sure. Were waiting on a shipment of low calorie dog food in from the petstore... which wont interfear with his weight loss eating a cup and ahalf a day.
My dogs food is a high calorie dog food so they need less of it.

Oops I didn't see the 1 1/4 there LOL! Sorry. I just had surgery today and im a little out of it still.. lol
Don’t count the days, make the days count.

Depends on the time of year and how much running they're getting. Right now I'm feeding about 1 3/4 cups per dog, but in the dead of winter when I'm running a lot, I feed 2 1/2 cups.

According to a dog show I was watching once upon a time, for better stamina it is better to only feed once a day. I don't know why, but they said that they did research on it and did varying species and numerous dogs per species and they all did better at one feeding per day. Maybe something to do with the way they live in the wild. Gorge yourself when there is food available and hunt again when you are hungry.... Who knows?

It definetly depends on what you are feeding. I feed two cups also and my dog are right on. maybe a touch over since we slowed a little. I feed black gold.

Mine are on a continuous feeder and they get meat scraps most every evening.

feeding

I free feed kibble. I only have one dog overweight and that is my daughters black lab that is neutered. They dont retain muscle mass once they have been fixed. I also supplement with yogurt (off of a spoon) and raw fruits and veggies. Meat scraps. Once in a while a raw egg shells and all. All treats and addits are used as training treats, nothing ever goes in the kibble bowl except kibble.

Interesting, I never heard that. I would have thought it healthier to eat 2 small meals vice 1 big one but who knows.
