For Doc S. The Salt????

Post by MasonsBeagles »

Doc
Was just wondering about the salt question. Is there any down sides with salting food or placing a salt block in the kennel for hounds? Other than making sure they have plenty of water.

Why??? If you feed good quality feed, then there should be no need for extra salt.

Salt

Well Doc
I have a young dog that was just not adjusting to the warmer weather, I took him and got him a total physical because I have other dogs from the same bloodlines that were not affected as bad. He got a clean bill of health. Well i kept on running him and he still was not getting used to it. He seemed dehydrated quick, a friend of mine suggested salting his food I had thought of this and so I tried it, figuring I had nothing to loose. Well I did it for about three nights in a row and then ran the dog in the heat and he was fine. It seemed that he was not retaining water for some reason. Well I have quit the salting because I was scared it would not be good for him and he seems better than he was. So I was wondering if I put a salt block in my kennel, they could self regulate their salt intake. I have seen farm dogs stand and lick on salt blocks occassionally but not sure what side affects or harm I could do to a dog by providing salt. I feed Diamond dog food (Green Bag).
