first breeding

Post by absolutelybeagles »

Is there a rule of thumb as to when the bitch is most responsive? My male is young, first time, and bitch is older and doesn't like him much, so I don't want to put her to him until she is likely to be acceptable. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The rule of thumb is to put the male in with the female when she first starts dripping. If she isn't ready, she won't stand and allow herself to be mounted. Take him out and try again the next day.

On another note, the old wives tale is that breeding early in the cycle gets you more males and later in the cycle gets you more females. My brother and I have found it to work that way most of the time, but it could be just a coincident...

Good luck with your breeding.
