My fm. is in heat. I want her bred with the male she was raised with but I dont think they have locked up yet. How long does heat last? When is it safe to take her to the field again, so she doesnt get bred by something else. Thanks

Don't take her out in the field if she is in heat, you will be asking for trouble.
It will call other dogs to the area, start dog fights, and mess up a whole hunt. Your dogs go down in the brush and the female comes up missing. Next thing you know you see her and a husky/lab/coon dog headed out of the brush. It has happened to people I know.
I have seen them in heat and running a rabbit and all the other dogs (males) running her.

They are usually receptive around 7 days in.
You can tell because the female will stand for the male.
Just leave them kenneled together and he will get the job done.

I think both of these dogs are a little young but, another problem may be that the bitch is dominant especially since they have lived together and he may feel "lower" in the pack than her and will not mate her. The other reason is that she is probably not ready. Many young males that haven't bred a bitch before will not have the "light" come on until she has ovulated.

Do some reasearch online for info on breeding and whelping. It always pays to learn about what your trying to do.

I'm assuming these dogs live together 24/7. First breeding for both male and female. She probably growled him off when she first started coming in and she was not ready to breed. He may feel a little reluctant at this point. Best to seperate them and then put them together when it is time to breed them. If she is flagging but won't stand still you may need to hold her still. Be kind and use praise in your actions or you may cause more harm than good. If he is not mounting her help him out by putting him in position and putting his front legs up on her. He should figure it out in no time. First breeding you may even need to help him get turned after they tie, keep her from trying to sit down or drag him around, etc. After the breeding seperate them for 24 hrs and then put em back together. It is best to supervise the breeding of your dogs so they don't get hurt. Many things can go wrong. Leaving them together 24/7 can be exhausting to the stud. Good luck!
