I have a hound here that seems to be having voice trouble. This dog normally has a clear, big booming, bawl mouth and within the last two weeks or so seems to have lost it. His voice has been reduced to a droning croak. I rested him the last week and took him out this morning without any improvement and I've started him on some antibiotics just in case its the result of some sort of throat irritant that has become infected. Anyone had this happen to a hound they've had before ??

I had this happen to a male last year. I had a female in heat and the male was growling alot, not barking but growling.

excessive barking in the kennel can cause this .heat stroke ,heat exhaustion can cause this .or when a dog becomes of a certain age voice can change . The only other thing ive heard of and i cant think of the medical terminology definition ,but the dogs has a layer of skin in their throat that actually enlarges ,usually causing them to breathe harder this can be taken care of with surgery but the dog will not sound exactly the way he did.
