Rabies shot

Post by coolbrze »

If you buy a rabies shot on the internet, does it come w/ a rabies tag or do you still have to get that from your vet?

Laws vary from state to state. Rabies vaccine can not be shipped to me here (in GA) as our law require the shots to be given by a licensed vet. Before this law was inacted, I gave my own and the tags came with them at that time. The item discription in the catalog should say whether the tag is included or not.

I know the ones I get from jefferspet.com come with tags. However, in Ohio it they won't reconize it if it is not given by a vet. Personally I don't care what the state says I do it myself to save money and I know the dogs are covered.

Here in NC, you can't even possess a the rabies vaccine by law. If for some reason, you get one and give it to your dog(s), your dog can still be quarrentined and/or euthanized even though it's HAD a rabies shot given by you or someone other than a vet or certified rabies vaccinator.

To me, it's just NOT worth the risk of losing a dog to save a couple of bucks. We do have a good rabies vaccination program where they offer various clinics throughout the year at different locations and the charge is minimal. I organized a club event a few years ago with a mobile vet to come to our club and do a rabies clinic for a reduced price.

Rabies

Post by ANTHONY KERR »

I just got 3 vaccinated on Saturday in southern Virginia. The rabies shots given by the vet cost me 7 bucks each. My vet does not charge an office visit charge if you make an appointment. I also had a parasite test done on my two four month olds for 11 dollars each. I had to shop around to find this office. The vets in town charge 18 dollars per dog just to see them. I have to ride 30 minutes one way but it is well worth it.

I called my vet about getting my 6 vaccinated and it was going to be about $400. I would say I'm saving more than just a few bucks.

DAGONE !
I think I might be looking into giving my own too. $67 per dog is way too much. In our town sometimes they have rabies clinics at feed stores or other places if I hit it right they charge 8 bucks and they do it on your tailgate and you get tags with certification. The vets here that work on livestock seem to have the best prices. That 67 per dog seems like robbery to me. I guess I don't blame them if they are filling the appointment book every day.

I bought a 25 pack of 5 way shots and the bottle of rabies vacs for about $110 from jefferspet.com and still have most of a bottle of rabies and about half the 5 ways left. I have enough shots to last from the next year or so. So I am actually saving about $700 or more overall. Seems like a good deal to me!
