Pregnant Bitch has dandrough in her coat

Post by Joeyman »

I have a pregnant bitch that is due this weekend and i noticed that her coat has white flakes. What could cause that and what should I be feeding her.

I would love to help you, but I would need more info.

It could be nutrition related (which I feel it probably is), so what are you currently feeding her, how much and how often?
She could be reacting to bedding material, but I don't think that would be as probably as a nutritional deficency.

I have been feeding her purina adult food twice daily but a big helping so I switched over to puppy chow three days ago and her coat looks much better.

Give her a bath in Oatmeal shampoo it is really good for dry skin, Change her bedding the same day. Their bodies go through alot of hormonal changes while pregnant. You should keep her on Puppy chow thru out the rest of her pregnancy and until she whelps. And then until the pups are weaned. Usually I feed pup chow the last 2-3 weeks of pregnancy at the normal ration. Good luck.

It's probably just normal dandrough like you or I would get, so I wouldn't worry about it. If it dosen't clear up in a few weeks I'd ask your vet for some conditioner or something to help moisterize her skin, or use some tips from here. :)
