I personally wouldn't mess with or administrate ivomec any more than I have to. It's a less expensive alternative for the prevention of heartworm, but the tolerance of overdose is small, and any you apply to the dog - in the ears, on the skin - gets absorbed into the system along with what you give them once monthly. Over time you will slowly poison your dogs, or cause some other kind of damage - even shorten their lifespan. I truly believe this.

I would recommend using Frontline, or thread a piece of those cattle tags through the collar to keep them off the dog. Sevin dust in and about the kennel will keep fleas to a minimum as well. Look your dog over good after running, and pull off any ticks you might see.

If we give Ivomec in the ear for mites, we don't give the once a month oral dose, as they get it when absorbed through the ear.
We've given Ivomec for the last 17 years, or since Blaine wrote about it in the Rabbit Hunter Mag., with no ill effects.
We use Paramite Dip for fleas and tick prevention and it works well.
Everyone should do what "they" feel is best for their hounds...
Best of luck ;) ...Patch

Patch, I agree that given properly, Ivomec is safe enough for "either" heartworm prevention or ear mites etc., but as you are doing, pick one application and drop the other. Some folks give it monthly for HW prevention, then turn around and give it for ear mites, mange and so on. I guess my point/advice was "pick one, but don't give it for everything."

i have noticed that my dogs have NO fleas most of the summer months. i give 1/4cc ivomec by mouth for heartworms each month and i believe that this is what helps them not have fleas. i could be 100% wrong but its the only reason i can think of as my neighbor next door fights fleas all summer long... and he DOESNT use ivomec or any heartwormer at all. all our dogs are on concrete ground kennels with a dash of straw in the houses in the summer.
