Autoimmune problems

Post by Don »

Our new pup looked fine. Born on 11-14-02. Entered our home on1-2-03. Slight limp in left front leg on 1-6. Immediately took George Bryson to local vet. Thought it a muscle strain. Gave him his first DHPP #1 shot after an exam. Within 24 hrs. George couldn't walk. Lots of guesses and about 6 antibiotics later they centered on an auto-immune titers. He is now taking 5 mg. of Prednisolone 1/2 pill morning and night. Seems better but still has not grown hair back on his snout from his eyebrows down to his chin. I really can't get a good easy to understand explanation of what autoimmune disease is all about. Will his pretty tan hair ever come back to his nose? Any info will be appreciated. Is this common to beagles? George is AKC purebred from established kennel. Don.

Don,

I'd be happy to give you information from my wife and her vet. My wife has had some experience with immune problems in dogs. Send all of the info you can (and photos of the dog, if possible), to jankowskimichael@yahoo.com, and I'll see what we can tell you.

Does your breeder know about this?

Has the vet considered Beagle Pain Syndrome?

Don,

FYI, my wife and vet say the limp/walking problems with a pup sound like dystemper. They said the booster is only a preventative and not a treatment, so it wouldn't have done any good at that time. I asked if it's possible that the pup could have been infected with dystemper from the booster, and they said "no."

The facial hair problems sound like mange. When did this hair-loss start?

My 2-cents, if this turns out to be dystemper...most breeders start with these boosters at 6 weeks, and your breeder obviously didn't administer them since you said your vet the first booster at almost 8 weeks. Additionally, I have plenty of problems with breeders allowing people to take dogs home that are just 7 weeks of age. And if the problems on the snout turn out to be mange...well, that's another black-mark on your breeder. Care to share who it is so that we can steer clear?

I'd try to get my vet expenses and purchase money back and get another pup elsewhere. I hope this pup pulls through for you!
