What causes goopey eyes/dis-charge?

We have a beagle that is requireing several cleanings a day...

Have you been running your beagle? Sometimes when they hunt a lot, they can get dust or debris (twig, piece of a weed or even a seed) in their eyes. Did the dog just come down with this?

You can flush the eye out with saline solution. There are ointments for the eyes that can help with irritation as well.

The other problem might be that the dog's eyes just water too much. The vet can put a dye in the eyes and shine an ultraviolet light in the eyes to see if there are any scratches or debris. I guess it depends on your situation which method you should try first.

Some dogs have a lot of discharge naturally. I don't know if it's the eye cleaning itself or what it is. One of our males constantly has a wet-spot from it and usually has a "goober" to wipe off daily. Conversely, one of our females is dry as can be.

If it's yellowish-green, then you should start to worry about an eye infection. And if the discharge is heavy on one side and light or non-existent on the other, then maybe there's a scratch or something to worry about. Otherwise, it's pretty hard to say if it's natural or a sign of a problem.

This little dog is a house pet only. The only debris she could possibly get is the corner of my wife's pillow

We too have another Beagle that doesn't have this issue. Fortunately, there are no weird colors to the "goobers".

She doesn't seem bothered by it, but we will double check with the vet next she is in.
