This is the same post from the other forum, just looking for advice! thanks all!

I've dealt with guns all of my life but never actually hunted, so I'm taking a hunter safety course to get my hunting license. (The pups say I have to have it so we can go play with the big dogs this fall!)

The instructors warned us tonight about "Tularemia" but didn't go into it, so I tried to look it up. Apparently a bacterial disease transmitted by handling or eating infected meat?

Anyone have any advice on whether or not my DOGS can get this, how to protect them and us, stories, advice etc? They made it sound fairly serious and I'm not finding a lot of information about it.

Thanks for the help! Barbara

it's a disease that effects rabbits. I'm unaware of it having any impact on dogs although i would not suggest feeding dogs rabbit gut. Aspotted liver on a rabbit is the indicator that i know of along with the rabbit not "running right" as if it were sick, lethargic.

I do know it can be passed to humans by eating infected undercooked meat. When gutting a rabbit check the liver for spots and discard if you come across one. If you kill a rabbit that is just not running like a healthy rabbit should i wouldn't tae the chance of letting my dogs have it or eating it myself.

ps/ i've yet to come across it in my area of Pa.
