momma dog losing her hair

Post by jeff »

I have a momma dog who has 3 week old puppies. she's now losing some hair, spotty patches on her side. my last female with puppies did the same thing. any ideas? im stumped on this one. they are above ground with a nice big whelping box, plenty of circulation.

It isn't uncommon. Lots of hormonal changes going on. Just ensure that you are feeding her a good quality puppy food while she is nursing as she needs the extras for producing milk. I always free feed while my females are nursing. It makes for a mess to clean up as she poops a lot, but you can't over feed at this point.

If it makes you feel any better, human women shed too after pregnancy... especially if they nurse. The body sacrifices itself for the production of milk.

Add a fatty acid supplement to her food. Many commercial foods do not have adequate EFA's as they are not required in animal feeds. They need the Omega 3's for skin and coat health and Omega 6's for moisture retention and inflammation. They will greatly improve a dogs coat! You can find MANY different types of these supplements, but I like the Lipiderm. It comes in pill form or oil form that you put on their food daily. You will not be disappointed!!
