Guys I ran a search on this, but could not find anything. What do you all do for a broken toe nail. One of my beagles came back in carrying his back leg. I inspected him and found that he had a broken toe nail.
It is broken way back in that at the root, and is still hanging on. I put some medicine on it and it apparently is very tender for the dog. Should I try to remove the toe nail or just let it be?
Thanks in advance,
Pete

Pete, I had one of my Patch females break one of her rear toe nails off just like you said your's did. It was just barely hanging when she came back in and she was hobbling. I just left it alone and in a couple of days it had fell off and not long she had a new nail growing back in it's place. That was back in the spring and now the nail looks like it's always been there.

I have also had this happen a few different time over the years to some hounds. They come in whinning and limping and I find one of their nails has been broken clear back to the quick and just hanging on by a thread. I grab it firmly (and quickly) with my thumb and forefinger and give it a quick jerk and it comes right off. The hounds have always took off and started hunting like nothing had happened. I think when it is dangling and flopping around it is very sensitive, but as soon as I remove it, it no longer seemed to bother them. Always grows back in normal too. CHH
