Allergy Symptoms

Great Site! My dog, Tippy, started getting cysts between his toes and then started with a hacking cough. He also began to scratch anywhere on his body that he could reach. I took him to the Vet and she told me he had allergies. He then developed sinus problems with green mucous coming from his nose. The Vet gave him an antibiotic and prednisone. It helped to some extent but not enough, so I took him back. She then prescribed an antihistime. This had no effect at all. The Vet put him back on prednisone and another dose of antibiotic. The scratching only got worse. Another trip to the vet, and she prescribed Tamril (a different kind of antihistime with prednisone). This seemed to help, but she only prescribed for eight days. On the 9th day, he was back to scratching and coughing as usual. Back to the vet again and she gave him another dose of Tamril. He's on his 4th day and he's not getting any better. Please help me! I can't stand to see him suffering anymore.

Did your vet consider a systemic fungal infection? That could explain all of the cysts, scratching, and coughing symptoms. They're rare, tough to get rid of, and can be hard to diagnose, but they're often fatal if untreated (and sometimes still fatal). One type of infection is blastomycosis, and you can read more about it here http://www.canismajor.com/dog/blstomyc.html

My wife had a dog with problems initially thought to be allergies and then mange (we confirmed the latter), and the treatments for those didn't fix all of his problems. It turned out he had "blasto" the whole time.

Is the dog still coughing? If a cough last for 10-14 days, a chest x-ray is in order.

I hope things are better!

Marilyn, ask your vet about Pododermatitis (interdigital cysts). There's an artical on the subject in the Feb. issue of The American Beagler. It can be a fairly chronic condition like Boomer says.

Dear Boomer & Bev,
Thanks for your replies. I have my vet checking on these issues.
