male dog coughing

Post by big creek beagles »

I am new to this site but I have a problem with a dog of mine with a cough. I noticed it about three days ago. What would cause him to be coughing? Should I take him to the vet?? Any help or advise would be a big help. THANK YOU!!!

I would suspect kennel cough. If he has it, antibiotics are in order to prevent secondary infections such as pneumonia. The antibiotics probably won't help the cough, though - it usually goes away on it's own in a week to ten days. Kennel cough is highly contagious, so be prepared to treat your other hounds if they start showing the symptoms.

There are other things that can cause coughing besides kennel cough. Advanced heartworms is one of them. A trip to the vet would be advised either way.
