I had an infestation last year. My neighbor cleaned up his mess and there was a couple of abandoned houses torn down in the neighborhood. I started realizing I had a problem when i found a couple of huge holes under our shed. For a week and a half I started Deconing and live bait trapping. One day I caught fifteen rats. I kept it up until the numbers started cutting back and the decon started staying. finally after about a week of all out warfare i mixed up some concrete and took a stick and put rat poison as far into the holes as i could. Then I filled the holes up with concrete. I didnt realize how bad a problem it was until i started the fight. Still I cleaned out my shed a couple of months ago and man o man the rat crap was unbelievable. It was everywhere and it was deep. Cleaned it out and Clorox bleached it to death. I would fight hard and fast on getting a handle on them. Poison Trap and kill all you can when you have eliminated as many as possible then eliminate their homes. Cause they will relocate if you just eliminate their homes. There could be hundreds if they have colonized like you said. Id say Two to three times that many rats were killed than what i actually saw. Good luck and get to killing.

JUST went through this ourselves here!
JUST ONE BITE
get the pail of the packets, and scatter them about in the tiny places these buggers run in, entrances to their holes and they'll pull the bag right in and dive into it
in about three days you will have to do a body patrol before getting dogs out as they will be everywhere! You should bury the remains, away from any water sources, cause the poison will effect "the next in line"

I went through half a bucket, and replaced the empty packets as the others were consumed. Three weeks later, the place was as quiet as could be. About 6 weeks after the original start date, I reapplied packets into the "known" holes and travel areas, just make sure some wanders didn't take hold.

Good Luck!

Smoke,
Being from Texas, now in Shreveport I have had rat problems. They will get dog, horse or any other food they can. The best thing I found was to first make sure your place is clean of any boards, lumber or any thing the rats can hide under. I am not saying your place is not clean but they can make a home any where. Go to your local feed store and get some stuff called Just One Bite. This cames in bars. Put out where no other anamials can get them or they will DIE.
Good Bless
Cedric
