hunter07 wrote:I have started having my dogs eat poop and saw this post. I was wondering if the calcium pills actually work and does giving them raw food work. Would raw hamburger be what they need? I saw something about stool eaters anonymous what is that and where do you get it? This is disgusting seeing them eat poop!
Thanks

Any type of raw meat would help. I do give mine raw hamburger meat but it's high in fats so it tends to give them loose stools, esepecially if they're not used to raw. Start out with small mini meatball sized pieces of raw in between meals just to get their digestive system accustomed to it. For this to work, it's best to give raw a few times weekly. Mine get lamb ribs/necks, chicken hearts/gizzards, beef liver, cut up chicken quarters, ground beef or free meat scraps from the butcher. It's important to replace a few kibble meals with the raw instead of just supplementing their regular feed with raw scraps ...

I've had more than a few stubborn poop eaters over the years and not one single die hard poo scavenger will continue to eat their stools or other dog's poops after a few days on raw. There are other remedies for this behavior, but they don't get down to the root cause of the problem, they just make the stools taste bad. Also, a daily tablespoon of yogurt helps aid digestion as well ...

I used a product called "forbid" for a while and it worked.Soon as i quit using it they went right back to eating poop.Well,i figured go ahead and let them have at it.It helps me keep the pen clean and keeps the septic tank from filling up!

Hey Windkist ,
I read what you posted about the calcium in bitches and was wandering if it would hurt to give them a tablespoon on yogurt ( dannon Activia ) with digestive culture in it ( bifidus regularis ) or would that be to much calcium in that amount of yogurt and would it be a good idea to feed a bitch that has been breed raw meat to help in digestion?

I don't give bred bitches anything extra. I am not a fan of raw meat either. I have a friend who was feeding raw chicken to keep tartar off his dogs teeth. He started having puppies who would die within a week of birth and when they did autopsy's on the puppies they had salmonella in such numbers as to kill them. If you are a raw feeding I suppose its ok to continue but, I wouldn't start it now.

I've heard of some dogs havin digestive prob., & they say to feed 'em yogurt or cottage cheese- but that might not be for the poop eaters.

Grass???

Seriously, My house dogs will eat grass too. All my kenneled dogs are out on grass in the yard at least once a day so, they have access to it more often. Perhaps those in pens on concrete or wire just really crave it? OR, they might get a little car sick and it helps them feel better?

I catch my dogs trying to eat cow s##t sometimes I think these cows are fed straight corn, so I don't know why it's so inviting. I always heard that they eat grass if they have digestive probs. WHY???????
