Windkist, I resign the floor to you in helping this fellow out

Patch... I was just joking with Larry about another discussion from another thread. While I don't think motor oil is the cure for everything or anything really if it works for you thats great. Hell, there are many old time recipes that work great I just think there are easier ways now and less messy too. I am in no way trying to be a smarta$$ and I hope that you know I respect your opinion ;-)

it is the Sulpher in the Used oil that will do the trick along with the oil itself Smothering the critters Aint it?????
Just like Some Wont use Seven Dust But will Spend $100s on the CHEMICALS to get rid of the bugs!!! better living Chemically I guess!! now myself i aint got no problem with the used oil Seen it Done before always with good results....Shoot I can remember takin our hounds down to the Sheep Farmers (basks) down the road to get them Dipped when they were doin thier Sheep never Lost a Dog and No Tick pickin either....
Ever used a mustard or Tobacco and lard poltice Works great fer treating chest ailments Ligament tears muscle strains, Colds, Drawin out splinters, infections ect. Shoot Seen White Gas used to treat Snakebite!!! (had it Done to me)!!! So just keep on keepin On patch Some of us are listening!!!!!!
Kinda Like usin Pickle juice to toughen up a dogs pads who woulda thought that would work.

No need for apology, you were trying to figure it out and help.
We can't put tone into our responces so those of us that don't know eachother don't know how to take the others reply sometimes.
I only know what worked for us in the past. Many of the old books confirm these ways and that's how I assume they come to us in the first place.
W.Randall, GG Black, H.W. Prentice, Otho Paget and even Beckford's old books tell of proven and natural cures and treatments of hound ailments.

I'm very used to OLD ways ;-) I grew up in Nebraska with grandparents that were racers (thouroughbreds) and man!! I've seen some things and had those same things done to me! lol My granny always threatened to treat my freckles with an old cure.. UGH! No thanks g'ma!

Ya know.. whatever works. Its always good to get plenty of opinions and patch is right. Nobody can put a tone of voice into an email so, things can get misconstrued.

Speaking of freckles, my brother always got them in the summer time, or at least they were more pronounced at that time of year. We always teased him that he was following to close behind the cows...

. Later, he teased my daughter of the same thing, when she grew up with the same affliction, but it wasn't near as funny then...

Windkist, tho it seemed serious at the time, I'm sure you gram was only kidding about ridding you of freckles.
My great-uncle use to chase us and threaten to chew our ears off, we were all scared of him but looking back, he was one of my favourites...

Patch let me throw in here that I have used the sulfur/burnt motor oil cure like you for probably longer than most on the board have been alive. We aren't going to change any of the newer ones' mind about it, and they have the right to disagree with the use of it. I know the vets say it's bad because the burnt oil can contain dangerous chemicals. Personally I do not trust the vets.

I learned about the cure from my elders as a small boy. Also if you read the books called "The Old Man and the Boy" by Robert C. Ruark as I did you will see that the old man showed the boy how to cure mange with it. It's old school and time honored, but these younger people are not going to use it. It's messy and smelly and they don't like that. I have a friend who has a kennel full of mangy dogs with little hair, and If I could get my hands on them for a week I'd cure them. He can't so they keep pickin' that banjo.

i have used desiel and water sprayed on my sow hogs to keep of the bugs when I lived in fl. worked well...

We kept oil soaked burlap sacks, wraped around lengths of hay rope, tied across the runways, for them to rub on as they passed under. Did the same with the cattle...spraying the hogs with desiel fuel got them coverd better...

I had a coonhound with a problem that my vet could not diagnose. He made an appointment at Virginia Tech's vet school. They had her diagnosed within an hour and I left her there for several days while they confirmed it. Cost about 300 dollars. A lot of money but it would be worth knowing if this is something inherited or could be passed to the other dogs. Maybe check with a local university.
