Do you know how to give subq fluids? It's like giving an injection, just that you are using fluids instead. He must stay hydrated or he will not make it. Which pedialyte are you trying? Plain unflavored or fruit flavored? If you are using the fruit flavored, they sometimes don't like the sweet taste of the fruit. Some vets will sell you a bag of lactated ringers, which would be the best choice if he's not taking fluids by mouth. Is he spitting it out or vomiting?
How's his activity level since going to the vet?

Sorry to read about your pup. Looks like you gave the pup the best effort you could. Vet bills are so darn high these days. And so frequently we end up with the result you have today. Just remember what the little pup has taught you so next time you will have more information and knowledge in your care and picking of a pup. I had a pup removed from my home in August- it still hurts! I will have a different approach for the next one. Do a good sanitize now so that 'bugs' don't surface again. Carolyn
thanks show dog,,,,,,,,,,,and some breeders just dont care,,,i honestly dought if the pup ever had any shots up till i got him or even wormed,,,,,,,i see why now so many people breed for thier selves,,,,,,i really bought the pup for my 9 year old boys birth day last month,,,,,some birth day present huh,,,,,,,,but he will get over it ill find him another pup but will be very optimistic about the next pup very picky i guess you would say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but thanks to all
yeah i this the vets are just guessing nowdays,,,,,,,,when i walked in he asked me what i was giving,,,,,,i told him 250mg of amox aday ,,,,,,,,he reply was man that is way to much,,,,,,,,im gonna take the dosage down to 50mg aday,,,,,,,pup done ok till he dropped the dosage,,,,,,,then 2 days later the pup started vomiting up some flem from his lungs, i took him back to a different vet and he told me the pup had phenominia,,,,,and ask what i was giving for it i told him i was giving 250 mg of amox aday being 125mg twice daily and told him the other vet dropped the dosage,,,,,,,and he told me if i would of kept up the higher dosage i would of killed the phenominia but since the other vet dropped the dosage the infection fought back harder,,,,,,,so he gave him a shot guessing it to be steriods and clavamox,,,,,,,i gave the pup 1 tablet last night,,,,,,,and in this 2 day period i gave the pup 1 1/2 quarts of pedealite,,,,,this morning he was dead,,,,,,,,,,,,,end of storie,,,,,,,,,,i know i havent sent the first vet his money and dont know if i will,,,,,,the second vet did not charge me a dime,,,,,,,,,

If your pup had a cold (virus), the antibiotics did NOTHING to help your pup...antibiotics dont help a virus, only bacterial infections...so I can understand why the first vet wanted to reduce the amox if he thought it was a cold also...the antibiotics might have helped a bacterial pneumonia, but not a viral one...I wouldnt be too quick to blame the first vet, I might look at the breeder first....Tony

Bluegrass, you have a point, but alot of the time they prescribe antibiotics to prevent a secondary infection. Besides, how many dogs do you know that have gotten a "cold". If a dog is wheezing (rattling in the chest) that should be a genuine concern to a vet, especially now days with canine influenza emerging.
I think vets are spread to thin and in a hurry to get in and out. I haven't been able to find one vet that I am comfortable with until just recently. She was thourough, helpful, and concerned. She provided me with the appropriate medications INCLUDING IV fluids for adminstration at home for a whole litter of pups. She didn't require me to bring them all in which saved me alot of money. I had never met her before that day and the next time I need to take a dog in to the vet, she will be the one I take it to. Also, I called her several days later and she actually called me back the same day (her day off).
