beagles and paint

Post by show dog »

I just painted in the bedroom because it's too cold and snowy to be in the bush. My young beagle licked the drying paint off of the wall. Vet recommended making dog vomit immediately, paint has the same product as antifreeze in it. Syringed quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide into her and up came the paint. She even did the vomiting in her crate. Guess she was looking for redemption! Any how, watch out for paint. Guess beagles will eat anything!!

Don't know about paint, but anti-freeze can do some pretty serious liver damage. Your vet didn't recommend bringing the dog in to be checked? Watch for signs of dehydration (not drinking as much and skin doesn't have "normal" elasticity) and yellowing of the eyes...these are sure signs of liver problems...

The vet was talked to twice within the hour of ingestion. Paint has the same ingredient as antifreeze so needed to be removed from the system asap. Since I was able to see the paint, vomited to bile and knew the time it was in her system, the vet felt there was nothing else to do at this point. Fed her her supper and she has been drinking fine. Out for a run this morning in the deep cold! She is fine tonight, surly little gyp that she is! The paint was in her less than 30 minutes probably about 15 minutes so wouldn't be in her bloodstream yet. Her nickname is Licky, Licky cuz she licks so much! Thanks for the concern. Carolyn
