What's the best bedding to whelp a litter of pups in?

My first litter of pups, I used a sleeping bag and just threw it away after everything was all said and done. The nylon absorbed the liquids and kept everything relatively clean. Newspaper can become a real mess and get stuck to the pups during whelping. Just my experience.

Or, the nice clean wood foor of the box will do in a pinch...
Paper absorbs well, easy to clean out and cheap to replace...
When whelping is complete, no bedding is necessary and the bitch will do a better job of keeping the box clean without it in the way. Think dampness and flies, with bedding in the box...

I like to use old bathroom floor mats. Wash them every couple of days. Put a fresh one in inbetween. Seems to pull the moisture away towards the rubber.
