warts

I have a female beagle that has a wart on lower lip right in the front about the size of a quarter is there anything to do but take it to the vet. thanks for any help

The wart may just go away over time. Viral warts are tough for the immune system to detect, so they don't usually attack them. You can buy liquid wart remover at the drug store. It's pretty strong stuff, so be careful to only let it come in contact with the wart. It should affect the wart after a few treatments, and it also tells the body that something's "wrong" and will stimulate the body's immune system to attack the wart. I've seen dogs have major problems with hundreds of warts in and around the mouth. By attacking some of the warts by removal or medication, the body realizes to attack all of them.

It sounds like yours is so big that it needs a vet's opinion if it doesn't start to shrink very soon. Warts are usually small and appear in bunches. Quarter-sized sounds huge, as if it may be a tumor or something other than a wart.

I took a dog to the vet. for a wart under his nose. It was the size of a quarter or a little bigger. The vet said as long as it was not causing the dog any problem not to worry about it. He also said I could use an over the counter wart remover if I chose to do so. I did not and within a few weeks the wart was gone. Bradley Rhodes

My dogs had a lot of warts on them also. My vet told me about a wart vaccine for cattle. I got some through my feed store and had the vet administer it In two weeks all the warts were gone. Get your vet to get you some.

I had a pair of littermates (8 months old) that had warts real bad around their lips. Grossed me out, but they disappeared one day as quickly as they appeared without treatment. haven't seen any since and the hounds are 2 years old.

What you describe is known as puppy warts. I use to work at a "doggy day care" and we often had pups come in with them. Basically once the body recognizes the virus and attacks it, the warts simply fall off. I can't remember if it is contagous to other dogs - I believe it is, but it doesn't last long.
They can be burned off - but this should only be done by your veterinarian.
I wouldn't recommend the "wart remover" from the drug store. It can seriously burn the dogs mouth which would lead to further problems. Talking with your vet is the best advice.
