heart worm medication

Post by BAYOU »

Does everyone give thier heart worm medication every month? Or is that just the norm? I believe I will go with interceptor rather than ivomec after much consideration. Ivomec would be cheaper but maybe its being a newbie that I don't feel comfortable with it yet. Interceptor does seem alot more expensive but seems to be safer. What else is commonly used besides interceptor? I also will be worming with canine all wormer or drontal + twice a year. does this routine seem reasonable. Also what is the dosage for nemex -2 for pups until 10 or 12 weeks? Thanks

I use Sentinel, which is just fancy Interceptor (just has flea prevention added to it) It is given monthly. You don't have to worry about strongid (nemex) or any other types of wormers, your Interceptor acts as a WORMER as well as heartworm prevention. If you THINK the dog has rounds or hooks you can give strongid as much as every 7-10 days for three doses, but your interceptor really should take care of it. I don't know the doseage, you need to know what strength you are using, most bottles SHOULD have instructions on it. E-mail me your dosage (usually mg per ml and I'll find out for you. You can start pups on Interceptor as young as 6 weeks as long as they are over 4 pounds.
The only parasites to watch for are coccidea (doubtful if you keep a clean kennel and stool check all newbies) and tapeworms (doubtful you will get them either, unless you let your dogs get fleas or if they eat dead things, like mice or rabbits, or dead fish)
You are eliminating most parasites with the Interceptor, and it has a VERY high safety rate (if your dog ate the whole pack, NOTHING would happen)
