Kidneys????????
We have lost a couple of nice uns to supposidly kidney failure recently. What could a dog be given or get into that will slowly slow the kidneys down or stop them from functioning? I have couple of dogs now that will go to vet. tomorrow. No energy, (at least not normal energy) some dehydration, rear end thinning at waste, walking with back legs close together and sort of tip toeing. (hunch backed) By the way these dogs are all my best and dogs I have field trialed??????????? I have noticed this in these dogs for awhile, wks.? 3.5 to 5 yrs. old dogs.

Protein can have an affect on kidney's. Many dog feeds boast of high protein and fat contents any more, but as in all things, you can get too much of a good thing. I feed a higer protein in the winter due to colder temperatures and the stress of hunting for long hours. In the summer I cut back on protein and fat as their bodies don't need as much to stay warm, and even though I train year round, it's still not as stressfull as hunting conditions.
Genetics also play a big part in Kidney problems. Just like diabetes and heart problems can be inherited in humans, so can kidney disorders in dogs.
Beyond that, certain toxins can also cause kidney problems, and if you suddenly have a number of dogs being affected, I would lean towards that and investigate. But remember, to also watch your protein levels.
Check with your vet. He may be able to narrow down the culprit for you.

If you can't run with the BIG DOGS stay on the porch!
Sounds like maybe antifreeze poisoning. Try this link for more info http://www.dovelewis.org/newsletter/spr ... freeze.htm

Was told by 1st vet. 1 did have some kidney damage but left in dark other wise. (how much damage, etc.) No answer as to the other other than some abnormalities in blood. (protein but kidneys fine) So paid my dews and brought them home for wk-end. Gater aid to one over wk-end that kidneys were fine. She was drying up fast. (dehydrated and not eating) Large knot showed up on chest??????????or I found it. Gang-green and infection!!!!!!!!! Can you believe that? Was offered 2000 dollars for this dog and the other vet. couldn't even find that? She is in surgery (exploratory) as I speek and our fingers are crossed?????? BETTER VET. Wayne
Hey Wayne, Sorry top hear of your problems.
I just went thru a deal like you are describing. My dogs seemed pretty healthy but was passing what we thought was blood thru urine when we ran him hard, after blood tests we found out he had high protein, that they thought was from feeding. They sent out to a lab for an occult test.......he came back heartworm positive! Sounds like your dog has many of the same symptoms as my dog had.
I had this dog on heartworm preventative for 6 months and it was killing the filaria(eggs) and showing a negative heartworm screen in office, but once Doc sent occult test out it came back showing antigens that led to heartworm infestation! Maybe you should ask the Vet if they done an Occult test?
I wish you the best and hope all works out for you and your hounds!

PPRCH Burr Rabbit Shylow will be coming home tomorrow. Barbed wire, stick, wire, or just an infection started on its own turned to gangrene in her chest. If dog is not eating and dehydrated it is not always kidneys. Check them out for wounds and or swelling etc. This vet. also looked at blood work of PPRCH WW Whatizit Wabbit Lukey and said the kidney problem didn't seem to bad to him. All is well for another day.
