How long does it take to dry her up?

Post by Emery »

What is the average timeframe that it takes to dry up a female after she quits feeding the pups? I sure would like to get some rabbit hunting in yet this winter.

Thanks,
Emery

You can ususally start when the pups are about 4 weeks old by taking her out part of the day and feeding the pups regular food twice a day. When they are 5 weeks I feed the pups 3 times a day and only put the bitch in at night. When they are 6 weeks I pull her all together and she will usually dry up in about two weeks. Some will wean them themselves before 6 weeks so I always start feeding the pups soft food at 3 weeks.

dried up

I do the same thing as Tom pretty much except I start pulling the bitch out at about 6 wks or when I see that she has had enough of the pups and becomes really fussy with them. If you pull her off slow then she will start to dry up on her on and when you do take her complete off she is not as susceptible to mastitis and other problem with the breasts. And when she is out, I leave free feed for the pups so they can eat when they get hungry and then I feed them some soft feen about 2 times a day. I start soft food at 3 wks also. I agree with Tom. Either way, it is best to wean slowly for the bitches sake.

I know how to wean the pups, my question was how long will it take for her to dry up? I just want to know a ball-park figure of when I can expect to go hunting again.

Thanks,
Emery

Emery, wait until she's no longer "bagged out", or in other words, tucked up nicely. The idea is to not have tits dragging in the brush. How long it takes her to dry up will be to her specific. Usually two weeks and they're ready to go. Having pups can put a strain on their energy and general well-being, so having her healthy and not too run down will be just as important.

Thanks Bev. She will be well rested and I definately won't run her too hard at first.

It says right in my first post that when you pull her for good she will usually dry up in about two weeks.
