Can somebody tell me about the AKC view on using frozen semen for breeding beagles.
Drawbacks if any etc...?
Expense?
Shipping hounds is around $200 for beagle one way. I would think the artificial insemination would be the safest and most practical way to go. I noticed one breeder offering frozen semen.

I know AKC competition breeders who have loads of semen saved from their top stud dogs, but I don't personally know anyone who has used it. It is certainly cheaper than doing a dog transport, and you don't have to worry about any disease exchange between the bitch and dog. And I know of a lot of breedings where even with the dog and bitch together, artificial insemination has to be done, anyway, for a variety of reasons. I don't know how much of a drop-off there is in effectiveness, though, when the semen is frozen. You may be more likely to not have the bitch impregnated.
Frozen or "Chilled Semen"
On another message board I received a little more information. Apparently, "chilled semen" is being used by a breeder and so far out of 8 ?? breedings , he's had 100 % conception. I wonder how easy it is for breeder to have the process done. Can most vets do it? Sure wish it was more popular because shipping is getting outragious since Sept 11th. Do we have a vet on the board that might shed some light on the matter.
