dry, red, itchy,flakey skin

Post by T webb »

Hey Doc,
I got a beagle pup the other day that has dry , red , flakey , and itchy skin and it 's bad. I have a vet app on monday. I just want a second opinion. the breeder said the litter was fine until they changed to bedding.what could it be? I was thinking It might be some form of mange but I've not seen it this bad before.
Thanks,Tim

Sounds bad! Rule-outs are as long as your arm...Chorioptic mange, Demodectic mange, flea bite allergy, atopy(inhaled allergens), food allergies, contact dermatitis, etc...etc! Let us know what you find out.

hey Doc,
It's Sarcoptic mange. My vet who is very good, said that this was the worst case of the type of mange that he has ever seen. He has only been able to diagnoes ( sorry for the spelling) it 3 times in his 25 years due to the fact it is almost impossible to get a mite in a scrape. He said that these mites go deep into to the skin. He also said it 's the hardest mange to get but it's easy to cure.
thanks,Tim

Tim,
I often diagnose Chorioptic mange(Scabies) based upon the owners also having skin lesions. 3 out of 25 positives based on skin scrapings would probably be about right. It is hard to find. Glad you have things under control.

Nope... Sulfur topically has some good antibacterial properties. That is where its healing, or supposed healing values come from. One might see such concoctions clear up some bacterial skin issues, but the potential harm outweighs any benefits.
