thinking about dosing him twice a day
5ml in the morning and 5ml in the evening what do you think would that be too much
I don't think that would be too much but that is JMO. I don't think it would hurt him at all.

thank guys for all the advise and prayers if ya said one I've never seen a pup
as full of it as this one even when he couldn't get around that good he would crawl like a GI joe
just to play and bite ya.
Thanks again to all. Those old Ringtails better be on guard this fall cause the boy
and his hounds will be out.

I've had him on cod liver oil cut back on the amout of puppy chow we've been giving him and the left leg
was alomost completle straight but went back.
the sun finally came back out and he is getting plenty of sunlight now and we got the pool open and started swiming him for exercise
I hope and pray we can get him straightened out he is one gritty little hound. And he is the first coon hound
my son has worked his butt off to pay for himself.

have you gotten him any powdered milk? it will have extra calcium. then just put the sun too him. not to beat a dead horse, but the sun is the best source of vitamin d, nothing else compares. even when it is cloudy out you can still get the uv rays that gets us vitamin d. any sort of glass or filter or anything but direct sunlight will not allow the uvb rays to pass through. try going to tsc and getting the self adhesive wrap to help strengthen his legs while he is trying to heal up. i really think it helped my dog that had rickets heal up faster. of course mine would try ripping it off but while out running around in the yard i had it on him.

anyways, i think you should get the powdered milk (even cheap generic powdered baby formula has lots of calcium) for the extra calcium then put him in the direct sunlight for all day depending on heat, wrap legs while he is running around, and maybe just get a tablet vitamin d3 supplement for a little extra. if the dog is getting the sunlight and vit. d without enough calcium to rebuild with nothing will change. i never measured the powdered milk out just covered all my pups food with it and mixed with a little water. once i think of it maybe the human baby formula has d3 in it too.

good luck, dave

I've had him on pet tabs giving him half a tab in the morning and the other half in the evening same with the cod liver oil
1cc in the morn. and 1 cc in the evening cut back on his feed this is the first weekend that has been nice and no rain I am so sick of the rain
we had him out all weekend in the sun I got my pool open and the kids have been swimming him for less stress on his legs he doesn't like it
but I think its helping out alot as soon as I get a chance I'll get some powder milk or even thought about getting some whole milk I think he is
growing to fast and thats the reason he went backwards on the left front. He did look better today.
Thanks

after a relapse the left one is back to being straight and the right one is finally
getting better. I'll probably pick up some powder milk this weekend along with everything else
we are doing the swimming is working great he doesn't like it but he swims 2x's a day
now that school is out the kids swim him in the afternoon and then I swim him in the
evening along with his cod liver oil and the sun I think we are making progress.
for only being about 11weeks old he has alot of grit not scared of anything loves to play
with an old coon tail I think he is going to make a nice hound for my boy when ever he sees
my son you can see that pup just light up ears perked up and tail starts wagging ther is
a real special strong bond I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

What are you feeding your dog?

Improper diet (translation: cheap dogfood) is the #1 cause of rickets, especially combined with a lack of sunlight. If you're feeding your dogs too much "cheap kibble," they will grow too fast (without enough real nutrients) and will, quite literally, get "all bent out of shape" ...

If you're trying to feed raw, but are "only feeding meat" ... you likewise aren't giving your dog all the proper nutrients ...

Many of the members have already listed the cure, which is good diet and sunlight, so if your dog is getting rickets again, you are not giving him one (or both) of these things. "Good diet" does not mean kibble, especially cheap corn- and wheat-based kibbles, it means a truly good and balanced diet.

Cod liver oil is an excellent, temporary way to boost the pup's Vitamin D, but you can give too much cod liver oil, as it has megadoses of both Vitamins A & D, which are fat-soluble, and therefore build-up and can be overdone to a point of toxicity.

Your best bet is to really feed this dog a quality diet, using eggs (with the shells), cheeses, raw chicken (with the bones), and to give your dog plenty of sunlight.

Good luck!
