CHERRY EYE

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT CAUSES PUPS TO HAVE CHERRY EYE?IVE TALKED TO GUYS THAT HAVE HAD BEAGLES ALL THEIR LIVE AND NEVER HAD A PUP WITH CHERRY EYE MOST HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IT.I THE LAS YEAR IVE HAD THREE GOT TWO FIGHT NOW AND ONE HAS IT IN BOTH EYES.IF YOU DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO SPEND MONEY ON HAVE A LITTER OF PUPS LOL.

There are weaknesses that develop and are passed down through any line if poor choices are made in breeding. If people are honest, most can be traced back to the source. I keep a couple here to remind me where it came from and what not to do again. Some will cut them out and sell or go on using them in the program, then when it shows up again down the road people are left to wonder what happened and where it came from. The same goes for skin problems, most will keep treating the problem to cover it up and go on breeding the same.
I have to wonder tho about anyone who has never seen or even heard about cherry-eye? maybe they knew it by a different name? The first time I saw it was in coon hound. The loose lower eye-lid made them susceptible to infections causing inflammation and thus the separation or tearing of the inner lid.

My advice is to fix the lid and band or spay the hound so the spread is stopped, then enjoy your hound for what he can offer. But for breeding, keep your standard at the type you'd want more of in the future...

I have a 3 year old female that has some major problems with it now,what I do is start her on benadryl for kids and also visin and it will clear up pretty quick but it will come back when she get's into something that she is allergic to.fleas are her big problem and that will set her off just about every time.

Seen it a lot in Patch dogs, and some Big Time dogs.
I cut them out myself Ive never had a problem afterward.

Haven't seen it in many, but there are key hounds that seem to produce a preponderance of offspring with the inflection.
What's worse is, if one of these hounds is bred and produces a good one, it is spread ten fold.
Reddog has seen whole litters of this mess raised in a horse trailer and wasted time and money, but the knowledge he gained was worth the trip and it won't be spread through his breeding...

i have seen cherry eye on grade dogs and all kinds of akc dogs. i have only had 2 patch dogs with cherry eye in 10 yrs.

Get a friend....hemostats....and a scapel.....and cut it out.....it will bleed for a few min and the dog will stand there wagging its tail....it wouldn't hurt to put some eye ointment in its eye for a few days. Your vet will charge you 50 to 150 to do the exact same thing.


Now lets see how many people cry over this lol.

If the inflammation isn't to bad you can move it back under the 3rd eye lid by placing your thumbs along the sinus cavity and slowly moving up and towards the tear duct. The thing is you need to make sure the dog don't have a lot of stress going on, this will cause the pressure in that area which the cherry eye will pop out, but a few treatments of eye ointment anti bacterial ointment and rolling your thumbs up towards the tear duct will cure it sometimes not always but a lot of times it will if you can catch it before it gets inflamed a lot and or infected. However you need to keep an eye on the dog and use the eye ointment w/ antibacterial stuff in it to make sure it is not from an infection of the tear duct, and you will need to keep the stress level down a tad for that dog till it grows out of it. I see it in pups generally at the age when they are re-homed or at 6 months when stresses are presented to the pups. Such as going on a lot of trips to dog shows and stuff. As for cutting it out on my own won't do it, had one that had a major bleeder, thankfully it was at the vets, she had to cauterize the incision area. She said if it was one that was done out of the office he would have likely died due to the way it bled and she couldn't get it stopped with out the cauterization of the incision area.

I thought stress caused alot of her issue's as well,she had some major issues with ear mites that I couldnt seem to get rid of and I would treat the mites and she would start rubbing her ears and eyes and then the cherry eye would pop out,so I decided a few weeks ago to send her to a retired fellow here in the county and now she's living comfortably on his sofa watching football on sundays and eating chicken breast for her meals!!
