I have a 15" male that has a infected toe due to a thorn in it.Igave him 11/2 cc last night, and he is walking and running just fine today. I squeezed all the puss out last night and today it is still swelled a little bit so i squeezed it again to night and not much puss came out mostly bloodso i gave him 1/2 a cc of penn tonight. If it is not better by tomorrw after noon he is going to the vet. I guess my question is how much penn is recomened for something like that.
Thanks in advance

Kelly, I'm not sure I have an answer for your question about how much Penicillin you should've used. This is just my opinion and that of a very good vet book I have,.....is that maybe only a topical ointment might have been a better choice.
The book recommends that Betadine solution (povidone-iodine), would be good as an antiseptic given as follows: dilute to 0.2 percent. In other words, put 2 cc's to 2 quarts of tap water
Then for pain with swelling or for an anti-inflammatory, you could give just regular old Aspirin as follows: 5 mg per pound orally every 12 hours.
Not to sound like I take chances with my own hounds, but if your dog is acting better, I think I would just keep a close eye on for now. Punture wounds are a little different from a laceration in that they can easily become infected (as you know), due to being sort of like a closed wound. Dirt, junk, etc. goes in, but can't drain out,....resulting in the puss and infection you "milked" out already. Plus they are hard to find on your dog due to coat. In a possible more serious case, or if your problem continues, the vet might surgically enlarge the skin opening to provide drainage, after which the area is irrigated with a dilute antiseptic surgical solution, and the wound probably wouldn't be sutured. I hope this helps, and that your hound makes a speedy recovery.

when our dogs get into thorns in thier feet or sore we soak them in bleach water. this will kill any infection that they have and help heal them up. the mix is 14 cups of water to 1 cup of good bleach and just stand them in the water for about 5 min. we do this every time we run a dog and it works great..... learned this trick from coonhunters a coyote hunters too.
