Scabby bumps on head

Post by Bootjack »

I have a three year old bitch that has about 30 small bumps on the top of her head, down the bridge of her nose & on her muzzle. I've been scrubbing them with witch hazel. When you wipe the witch hazel on the bump a scab comes off taking the hair with it leaving a bald spot. These bumps are smaller than a baby asprin & are ONLY on the described area. She seems to be be getting more of them with each passing day. They are not from fleas, as I treat for fleas religiously. I also have another bitch kenneled with her & she doesn't have any of these symptoms. Dog appears in perfect health other than this.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Is she scratching alot? If she doesn't have fleas but is still scratching quite a bit it could be a food allergy. Had a dog once like that and it drove me nuts trying to figure out what was wrong.

I dont think it's a food allergy. She isn't scratching much & I am pretty strict with her diet. Anything is possible though.

I am giving her some fish oil, a vitamin & started treating with NU - Stock (treating for mange) If I cant clear it up we'll be headed for the Vets.

Anyone have experiance with mange? Any suggestions?

I am 99% sure it is not mange. Are there fire ants where you live? That would be my first guess. Just before the problem started, did you run the dog after a rain or early in the morning when the dew was heavy? Dew poisoning would be my second guess. If so, there should be similar scabs on the chest area. Regardless, I would give three cc's of penicillin G in the muscle of the back leg. That always clears up a similar condition my dogs get on their ears in the summer.

No, fire ants aren't an issue up here. I've never heard of dew poisoning but I am going to reasearch this as well. There are definatly none on her chest. They are mostly on top of her head & muzzle. I run her often, especially during an evening rain in the hot weather.

Thanks for the input. I'll post the results.

without seeing a pic i would guess its a papoloma virus------fancy word for watrs,i had 2 of my three dogs get them before on thier tongues but sseen pics of dogs/cattle with them on ears and lips
here is some info with pics.i recommend squeezing one or to very hard, that seems to start a healing process.it may reoccur years later

I had this happen to my 3 hounds after running them one humid morning with lots of dew. It was really bad on one of the dogs, covering his whole head, ears, and started spreading down his sides and back.
Vet said a skin virus from the dew and gave an oral medication called Simplicef.
I tried slatehring him with Nu Stock first and that did nothing but stink everything out that the dog was near!

Well guys thanks for all your input. I finally got this under control & it's almost all cleared up. This is what I did:

1st- Removed all scabs & cleaned the sores with witch hazel. This exposed an ulcer like sore.

2nd- Started giving her 1- Pet tab & 1- fish oil tab daily.

3rd- Treated each sore with Nu-Stock. This seemed to be helping the exsisting sores but she was still getting a few new ones.

4th- Gave her a bath with Happy Jack anti-fungil soap. Then re-applied the Nu-Stock.

5th- Gave 3cc's penicillian G inter-muscular. 3 days later gave her another 1.5 cc's

Through-out this process I kept Nu-Stock on all the sores daily. I need to add that after I gave her the 1st shot of penicillan she didn't develop any new sores & the Nu-Stock really seemed to heal them up quite fast.

What was it? Still not sure. What cured it? Not sure, but the penicillan seemed to help the most?

Thanks again for all your input.
