Question on worms

I am about to start worming my dogs with ivomec i have been worming monthly with valbazen for hook, round, whip, etc. I talked to one of my older hunting buddies that has had hundred of dogs his life he wormed with ivomec month and only used valbazen or what ever to control other worms only when his dogs started lookin unhealthy like they had worms. My question is will ivomec control all the worms or just heart worms. If not i still want to continue my month worming along with ivomec is this safe to do on the same day of the month or not at all or what? Thanks

Ivomec works on everything but tape worms. Ivomec once a month and something for tape 2- 3 times a year in the middle of that month or as needed, tapes are easy to identify as you will see them. Ivomec works on heart worm prevention, but if your dog has heart worms it may kill the dog. Also beware there are certain kinds of dogs that you can't give ivomec to, I think collies but not sure.

Ivermectin, like any drug, needs to be given in the correct dose ... and, regardless of dose, worms can build resistance to it. In a world undergoing constant evolution, there is no "one" drug that will work forever ... because organisms continually build resistance to medications. Ivermectin is a great drug for worms, but it can be under-dosed, resisted, and fail to work like anything else. Valbazen is another drug that can fall into the same pattern. The best way to worm a dog is with a rotational schedule of using different wormers, making sure you are giving the proper dose. The worst way to worm dogs is to use one of these "catch-all" pills that seem to be so popular, but are actually poorly-conceived ideas for reasons that I am getting into in a blog I am developing. Using any "one" wormer, over and over again, is never recommended.

Ivermectin does not work on whipworms either, and (if under-dosed) will fail to kill the worms it's supposed to kill. Also, regarding heartworm, ivermectin does not kill the adult worms, it only kills the larvae that have not yet made it to the heart but are in the bloodsream.
