dew claws on back legs
Does anyone cut off the dew claws on the back legs on pups and does it bleed alot . I know it has to be done before or about 3 days old

I cut dew claws off all of my pups if they have them by 3 days old.

i use large toe nell clippers on puppies and wire cutters on older dogs then put flour on the wound nothing to it

i have raised beagles over forty years i have aiways cut them off before five days old they dont bleed a lot they heal over in about five days

YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE HELP ON THE OLDER ONES I HAVE CUT THEM OFF 3 YEAR OLD ONE JUST BE SURE YOU GET AS CLOSE TO THE LEG AS YOU CAN

I always cut them off the pups at about 2-3 days old and they don't hardly bleed.I also use a pair of the large nail clippers and dip them in rubbing alcohol first and get as close to the leg as you can.I don't bother with the front dew claws as they never seem to cause a problem like the larger rear ones can.I wouldn't try cutting them off older pups or hounds myself as you can cause some problems,but that's just me. Some guys will do anything to their hounds and I've got a lot of vet. customers who tell me they are constantly dealing with the results of guys that are operating on their own dogs and screwing up.[like trying to dock tails on older dogs or trying to crop the ears on their pitbulls etc.].
