Wormers and Pregnant Bitches

Post by Big Dog »

I have a female that was bred last week. It is now time for her monthly deworming. I currently use Interceptor and Droncit are these safe for a pregnant bitch, If not what is?

Interceptor is quite safe for a pregnant bitch. Unless she has tapes, you shouldn't need to do an additional worming. Interceptor gets everything except tapes.

Thanks Bev, I was concerned about the tapes as well. This dog has been run in the wild a lot, right up until she came in heat and you know beagles they are always eating something. I haven't seen any tapes in her stool, but just wanted to be sure. I guess I will just hold off on the droncit and just use the interceptor as normal.

worming

I have heard different things.
Interceptor is safe. Have a friend whose vet said use panacur with a preg female not strongid. Then he flip flopped. I do know that Drontal + is harder on the hound than the others. I do not worm with strongid with a preg hound but worm her when I worm the pups at 3 wks. I wormed one with drontal + about this time also and she got off her feed a couple of days. So the next time I waited until she weaned the pups. I drontal + all twice a year. Like you said, if they are out running they can pick up tapes. Also, if they eat just one flea, that can cause them to have tapes. What I would like to know is, "Do you follow up 3 wks later with another dose of drontal +"? Do you tape worm your pups???

I only recomend deworming for tapes if they are there. Interceptor and Sentinel are both safe for preg/nursing bitches, as are both Panacur and Strongid. Deworm bitch and pups at 3,5,7 and 9 weeks with Strongid(pyrantel). Doc S

I don't wish to belabor the point but, Panacur and Safeguard both contain fenbendazole. If one is safe for pregnant dogs the other should be also.
