knots on neck after 7-way

Post by BriarCreekBeagles »

I have two pups that will be eight weeks old Sat. I gave them their 7-Way shots about five or six days ago and they have knots on the back of their necks. The gyp has a knot that seems to have gotten bigger over the last few days. I have never seen this before and given alot of shots to hounds and was wondering if I should be concerned or if this was very common, I have been rubbing the knots and trying to get them to go down because I have seen this in horses before and thats how I took care of it with them. They both are very playful and full of spunk and don't seem to be bothered by the knot It just concernes me because I don't like for my hounds to be uncomfortable in any way and if there is something I need to do different to benefit them in anyway I need to know.
Thanks in advance, Kris

When most people give puppies their shots, they rub the site very well, immediately after to disburse the serum, so it won't cause these knots. Did you do this? I've done this for over 40 years and never had a knot develop later. Terry McBride

I would just leave it alone. Sounds like a localized reaction that may be moving in the direction of an absess for the female. It MAY eventually drain externally (or it may drain internally). Either way, it is a wait and see. If they seem fine and are not running a fever, just keep an eye on it. Should it open and begin to drain, treat it as you would with any open wound to prevent infection. I would use a different brand of shot next time. Good luck!

Been keeping an eye on both pups and rubbing the knot real good everyday and they are starting to go away. One thing is for sure I won't be using that brand of shot anymore.

Yes, I always rub the area immediatly to disburse any liquid that may form a pocket. I've seen a lot of vets do this same thing when they administer a shot.

Eventhough it would be interesting to know what brand the shots were so we could compare our experiences, we need to be careful going on a witch hunt here!!!!! Each dog is individual in how the react (or don't) to various things - just like us! Heck, my wife is so allergic to latex that she reacts to the type "bandaids" I have worn all my life without a problem. Obviously, those particular pups reacted to a particular shot so THOSE TWO NEED A DIFFERENT SHOT. I bet the reaction was not to the actual killed virus but whatever it was cultured in (such as egg yolk?). They MAY react to other brands as well. The reason I recommended a change was for a chance of avoiding a repeat of the reaction to a confirmed allergen FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS! Best wishes to all!

i was advised by vet not to give shots between the shoulder blades give them nore to the side of the shoulder so the injection could run down and not settle in between the blades as it could cause lumps and turn into infection

It's not the brand of injection that causes the lump, but rather how you administer the shot. Bigriver has a point about not giving it between the shoulder blades. I've seen dogs get lumps from the same shot on certain injections but not others. Just my opinion. -Hannah

Shoot the 5 way not the 8 way on the side not the neck and your troubles are over. Rub it in good.
