New puppy - health ??

Post by Diana »

Hi Doc & other beagle lovers...my family just adopted a beagle puppy - he's 6 weeks old. He had his first shots the day before we picked him up and he was wormed once. He's eating and drinking great and sleeping & playing well, but I noticed the night we got him home he had a runny, bloody stool. The next several stools were normal, but this morning he had another runny bloody one. We're feeding him the food provided by the breeder in the right amounts. I have a vet appt. scheduled for tomorrow but am wondering if I should be calling to get in today...what do you think? Cause for concern or does he need another worming? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like Cocchidia (sp?) It can be common in pups and creates a bloody stool as can Whip worms. A stool sample by the vet would be in order and worming following that. Good luck with your new pup!

I would take a stool sample with me to the vets and have it tested too. Could be something major or something as little as needing to be wormed more. I took a sample with my last litter of pups. I worried about all the different things that it could be. It ended up being worms. I guess from what my vet says that there is four different classes of infestation. These pups had a class three, (Four being the highest). I got the bitch and she was already pregnant and she was full of worms. They do pass them to their pups.
Good Luck, Let us know how it turns out

Thanks for all of your replies...We leave for the vet in a little while and I'm bringing a stool sample with me so he can have a look. :)
