Abortion Shot
I had an accidental breeding here between a good AKC female and a good grade male and I tried like crazy to find a vet that would administer a shot that I thought was available to prevent the pregnancy, but went through 7 different vets and animal hospitals, and no one would do this for me!! They acted like I had suggested they kill the pope instead of preventing an unwanted litter of non registerable hounds?? Is this something new, or is it just where I live?? Tony
I believe that shot is now illegal and they've taken it off the market. Vets can't even do the procedure anymore. The shot can be extremely harmful fo the mother. You're better off letting her have the litter and just give the pups away. Close monitoring of her heat cycles will prevent any unwanted pregnancies, or keeping her on Ovaban if you think she's due will prevent her from coming into season. Not all bitches do well on Ovaban, though. Some get puny and lose desire. Hope this helps.
Bev, thanks for the reply...I talked to another vet today and the shot isn't illegal, vets are just reluctant or flat out will not do the shot due to it being a new medicine and is a lot stronger than the older shot and does adversely affect the female's hormones. I did moniter her cycle and was 48 hours away from breeding to a fantastic direct son out of Ogemaw Casey!!! But, someone had other ideas, God does what he wills...LOL. Tony
Just so everyone who reads this posting knows, I was told that the main problem with the "abortion shot"{for lack of a better term} was that the risk of infection is very high and after that, the dog needs to be spayed to get rid of the infection, so you are ruining your dog just to keep an unwanted litter from coming. I have decided to sell the pups and try again another cycle!! Tony
I think what you are looking for is called (spelling may be wrong)
"Lutilice". We use it some to syncronise herds of cattle so they will all cycle about the same time so as not to have our calving strung out over a long period of time or to enable us to cycle her for a flush(embryo stuff). I have used it on bitches before but at a much lesser dose will no ill affects. It must be used within a week of the accident and not 30 days latter. They WILL abort.

Bill, thanks for the info on that particular method, but unfortunately, I have missed that 7 day period...I will keep it in mind for the future however I am the one to blame since I failed to put her up quickly enough and protect her until the day I was going to have her bred!!!! Thanks though, I appreciate it. Tony
